Through crumbling cave,
Over smothered heath,
Through soldiered city,
With steel unsheath,
Neither man, nor elf,
Nor dwarf or beast,
Could suffer joy,
In song or feast.

Yet thread unstitched,
Became stitched anew,
Voices broken,
Became loud and true,
Those the night did endure,
Wept not in the morn be sure,
For raiseth the horns,
And raiseth the flags,
The fawns that bled,
The blood of stags,
From those of the past,
To those of the morrow,
Or minstrel,
Telling tales of sorrow,
The glory of men,
A glory so hollow,
Till riseth again,
In a world we borrow.
