Introduction

The Emposian Kingdom is by far the strongest and most dominant power on Aerath. The lands under Emposian control may be collectively referred to as Emposia, and are thought to be the moat extensive of any single power on Erasan. The Emposian capital of Empo Sar was originally founded by Aigelthin I to bring order and stability to southern Aerath in the dark times that followed the War Against the Shadow. It was from this small pocket of solidarity and security that the Emposian Kingdom spread to become the supreme power on Aerath; making this period the 'Age of Emposia'.

History

Since the crowning of King Aigelthin I ("the Founder") in 165, 30 kings and queens have sat upon the throne of Emposia. One of two great families has always ruled over Emposia. The Baerlings (House of Baerin) have been in power for the majority of Emposian history. However during the years of 490-635 the Tokurans (House of Tokura) ruled. Each king and queen has brought their own touch unto the world. And with it the glory and the tragedy, the celebrations and the scandals; it would be unfair to single out any monarch in particular, as these few pages would not do these great monarchs justice. Nevertheless I shall cover the most notable portions of Emposian history in regards to them.

There was of course our founder, King Aigelthin I (Aigelthin Grindumson al'Baerin) who ruled from 165-208 and brought stability to south-east Aerath. Many years later Aigelthin II "the Builder", tirelessly worked to restore the Emposian economy and foreign relations which had weakened to the point of breaking before his reign of 425-471. He was also responsible for completion of the outer wall of Empo Sar, and many buildings of Empo Sar which still stand today, including the Royal Library of Empo Sar, the Empo Sar harbour and he set the foundations for the massive sewer system under the city, which was completed shortly after his death by his son Lubjale II.

Following the Emposian annexation of Kraan in 244, the nobility of Kraan (the Tokurans) made a deal with the Emposians saying that they would subject to the Emposians and defy all thoughts of revolt if the highest ranking Tokuran could claim the title as king of the Emposian Kingdom as long as there would be no Baerlings claiming the title. And this is what happened in 490 when Lubjale II died without any heir. Tiratoris I of the House of Tokura was thus brought to the throne and despite the controversy of his link to the throne, his parentage was quickly forgotten once his ability to rule was shown.

Less kind words can be said about most of the Tokuran rulers who followed, as this period became a time of trouble in Emposia. Plagues, wars and discontent fractured Emposia's society. Most notably was the rule of Grandum I, which was the time of the Notrim Massacre, in which many protesters, especially in the lower city, were slaughtered by the order of King Grandum I. This was just one of many violent and brutal events during his reign that gave King Grandum the sobriquet "the Cruel". He was later assassinated by his nephew and heir to the throne, Aegum I. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there was no criminal investigation into the assassination, and few mourned the passing of King Grandum I. The death of heir-lees King Hathus I in 695 saw the end of the Tokuran reign and a return to power of the House of Baerin, as King Ailgeth I was brought to the throne. Some years later,

Page 6

following the voluntary abdication of Ailgeth I, Eirim II was crowned king.

The years of King Eirim II were largely peaceful, however tension between Emposia and Maliera gradually grew, and Eirim II was assassinated during a royal visit in Sivaris In 727. His immediate successor, Aegum II, declared war upon Maliera. The war lasted for 12 years before a truce was settled in 739. Although it has long been said that tension between the two powers of Emposia and Maliera has never truly diminished.

In 776, Liranda became the first queen of Emposia. This event marked what had been a gradual change in Emposian thinking in regards to sexual equality. It must, however, be said that this was also at least in part due to the fact that the alternative was a male Malieran prince. Nonetheless, Liranda's reign saw many changes, many for the better, but it also saw the beginnings of the Emposian-Malieran war which lasted from 815-929 and later took the lives of both Queen Liranda I and King Ailgeth II.

In 887, Eirim III came to the throne, with the Malieran Empire at the doorstep of Emposia, Eirim couldn't have been given a tougher time to rule. That said, his ability as both a dedicated, more-than-competent leader and brilliant strategist led his reign to be considered as being one of the finest in Emposian history. And it was in King Eirim III's reign that Emposia finally

triumphed over Maliera. It was also Eirim III who was responsible for rewriting the laws regarding the choice of heirs, allowing female heirs the same rights as men to become monarchs of Emposia. This later allowed Queen Liera I to become the second queen of Emposia in 945.

The current Emposian monarch is King Eirim IV, from the noble House of Baerin. And long may his reign be.

Politics

The Emposian Empire was originally founded to be a small, but secure bastion in a dark and war-torn world. But when time went by, and this bastion managed to stand the test of time it slowly began expanding. First through the conquest of Kraan, and later through a century-long and bloody conflict with the Malieren Empire which ended with Emposia annexing Maliera. From being a small community based an defending the people of Hawk Hill, to becoming a kingdom, and now an empire has made its impact on Emposian politics.

Today, domestic Emposian politics is mostly focused on the struggle between the different Houses in the empire. Most notable of these Houses are the ones of Baerin, Tokura, Simmun and Brod. Of the minor Houses, only a few of them have any real power without the support of one or two of the major Houses, these are the Houses of von Prospel, Osric, and the dwarven clan Hawkeye which has taken residence in Empo Sar. Besides the Houses there are also some men of the commons who at times speak of an Emposian Republic.

In a world where great wars are fought between races for the most insignificant detail, the Emposian Kingdom could be regarded as the most race-tolerant of it's kind, in regards to Elves and Dwarves (there is much to be desired in the common treatment of other races). Following the War Against the Shadow, and the

alliances between men, elves and dwarves during that time, there was no more conflict between the different races than there was within them. Although there are now mixed views an this subject elsewhere (and the regression of both elves and dwarves since the shadow wars), the Emposian Kingdom has generally always encouraged friendship with the elves and dwarves. It is thought that the general Emposian regard for their forest and mountain-dwelling neighbours has only aided their kingdom's accent to power, whilst the less tolerant have fallen.
