Introduction

The alchemist and potionmasters of old were said to have been able to brew potions to grant life, hasten death, and everything in between. Much and more of the secrets of their craft has been lost during the times of war and shadow. I and a few other potionmasters of this age now endeavour to discover more of this art, and much of what I now know I shall share with you in this book.

FUNDAMENTALS IN POTION MASTERY

In simple terms, most potions require three main components: an active ingredient, a neutraliser, and a stabiliser. Of course, be aware that most ingredients have multiple effects, so you will find that many ingredients may be both active ingredients and neutralisers.

Page 4

Active ingredient
This is the most important and influential ingredient and is responsible for the main effect of the potion. Many such ingredients exist, each with different effects: fireweed (healing), dragon blood (health and mana regeneration), powdered horn (strength enhancing). More complex recipes may even call for more than one active ingredient.

Neutraliser
Active ingredients often have multiple effects, not all of which are required in a potion. A neutraliser ingredient is capable of extracting or reducing certain negative characteristics of the active ingredient. For example: mint is commonly used to cool the fiery effects of fireweed in a healing potion.

Stabiliser
All potion are based on a stabiliser potion. This helps the potion ingredients mix with one another and affects how accessible the potion is to the user. The most common stabiliser potion is usually made up of: water, blueberries or redberries, plant matter (cut grass or plant leaves being the most common), and sometimes plant/tree sap (to increase the duration of the effect).

QUANTITIES AND POTENCIES

There is much variety available to use from the natural world. Use more potent ingredients to create stronger potions. You may also find that the recipes you find in this book are not as potent as they might be; you should experiment with different ingredients and quantities in order to find the strongest combinations.

Making larger potions will also increase the initial effect and the effect will last longer, however the user will find that larger potion are not as efficient in terms of ingredients used. For instance: a flask of healing potion requires twice as many ingredients as a vial of healing potion, however the healing effect is not twice as strong. Also, consider using a tree or plant sap as part of the stabiliser potion. These slow the release of active ingredients, and so extends the duration of a potion's effect.

The following few pages contain numerous example potion recipes which are recommended for novices potion-makers.

STABILISER DRAFT
A simple stabiliser draft is the basis for almost all potion recipes. For 1 vial of stabiliser potion:

3 blueberries
3 green leaves
1 vial of water

For flask of stabiliser draft, double the above amounts of ingredients and use a flask of water. To fill a potion bottle, multiply the amounts above by three and use a potion bottle of water. To slow the effect and extend the duration of a potion, use 1 vial of three or plant sap as part of the above stabiliser potion. This will create a basic stabiliser regeneration draft.

HEALING ELIXIR

1 fireweed seed or 3 fireweed flowers
3 mint leaves
1 vial of stabiliser potion

MANA ELIXIR

1 xilis mushroom
1 vial of stabiliser potion

OTHER POTIONS

MAGEBANE POTION (prevents mana regeneration)
1 magebane herb
1 vial of stabiliser potion

DRUIDIC ESSENCE POTION
1 withelroot seed
1 magebane herb (neutralises withelroot to prevent immediate release of energy)
1 vial of stabiliser potion

CLOVAR POTION ('five-leaf luck')
1 clovar herb
1 vial of stabiliser potion

NOTE: Despite many years of study, we are still yet to have explained fully how the rare clovar herb acts in this potion. The user will simply find themself to be more lucky in combat. Consequently, this potion has been nicknamed "five-leaf luck". It is more likely that this 'luck' may be attributed to some increase in dexterousness.
